In Bolivia, Agronomes et Vétérinaires sans frontières is working with the indigenous Quecha and Aymara communities in the Cochabamba Mountains (4,000 metres altitude). The families earn their living mainly from growing potatoes. The rural farmers have to use nationally-certified seeds while they have their own precious know-how in terms of exchanging, selecting and therefore the means to naturally enhance their own seeds. ORPACA, a Bolivian producer’s association, is thus working on putting in place an alternative certification system. A Bolivian delegation came to France recently to exchange ideas and experiences with different players who have taken alternative paths in order to create greater freedom with regard to seeds!
