Background and interests
In Zambia, elephants and farming communities share a common territory. The cohabitation of these two species is a successful example of preserving wildlife and protecting the interests of local populations.
A pilot project for human-elephant cohabitation has been successfully implemented in five villages bordering Kafue National Park, involving 356 farming families and around 1,700 people. The project implements biological fencing and agroecological practices to reconcile the legitimate interests of local people to live off their ancestral farmland and preserve their crops, while ensuring the protection of foraging elephants.
